Concertina XL cd
What is it?
A preparation which is a central nervous system stimulant and a controlled drug, containing methylphenidate hydrochloride, available as sustained-release, capsule-shaped tablets in two different strengths. Yellow tablets, marked alza 18, contain 18mg and white tablets, marked alza 36, contain 36mg.
Medical Uses
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children (ADH).
Dosage
Children over 6 years, 1 tablet once each day, increasing gradually if needed by 18mg per week to a maximum daily dose of 54mg. If there is no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment, drug should be withdrawn.
Special Care
May only be prescribed under the supervision of a specialist in behavioural disorders in children. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, history of abuse of alcohol or drugs, psychosis, epilepsy, high blood pressure, swallowing difficulty, narrowed gastrointestinal tract. Blood pressure, weight and height require monitoring during course of treatment; Also, blood counts if treatment is prolonged. Drug must be carefully withdrawn.
Avoid Use
Heart arrhythmias, serious angina, thyrotoxicosis, glaucoma, severe anxiety or agitation states, family history of Tourette's syndrome (abnormal condition of childhood in which there are involuntary grimaces, tics and arm movements, possible grunting, shouting or snorting) or tics (involuntary spasms of facial muscles, usually psychogenic in origin).
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Tcads, clonidine, anticoagulants, guanethidine, MAOIs, alcohol, phenylbutazone, anticonvulsants, pressor agents, SSRIs.
Known Side Effects
Headache, weight loss, high blood pressure, weakness, insomnia, loss of appetite, nervousness, gastrointestinal upset, rash, aggravation reaction, tics.
