Cosmofer

What is it?

A haematinic preparation comprising a complex of iron-hydroxide and dextran, available as a solution in ampoules for injection, delivering the equivalent of 50mg of iron per ml.

Medical Uses

Anaemia caused by iron deficiency where iron cannot be taken orally or when it is desirable to replenish the body's iron stores as quickly as possible.

Dosage

Adults and children aged over 14 years, by slow intravenous injection or infusion according to manufacturer's prescribing notes and under supervision of specialist physician in hospital.

Special Care

Inflammatory disorders, autoimmune conditions. There is a risk of anaphylactic shock, hence patient must be closely monitored and facilities for giving cardio-pulmonary resuscitation should be at hand.

Avoid Use

Children under 14 years, pregnant women in first trimester, previous anaphylaxis, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, asthma, other allergic conditions, cirrhosis of liver, acute kidney failure. Patients with haemolytic anaemia, difficulties in iron utilisation, iron excess or overload.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Iron supplements or iron-containing preparations taken by mouth.

Known Side Effects

Muscle and joint pain, allergic, anaphylactoid responses, shortness of breath, chest pains. Any adverse side effects must be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
