Cozaar

What is it?

An antihypertensive, angiotensin 11 antagonist available as film- coated, white tablets in 3 different strengths containing losartan potassium; oval-shaped, contain 25mg; rival and marked 952, contain 50mg; teardrop shaped and marked 960, contain 100mg.

Medical Uses

High blood pressure

Dosage

Adults, 50mg once each day, increasing, if required, to a maximum of 100mg once each day; elderly persons aged more than 75 years should receive a lower starting dose of 25mg once each day.

Special Care

Various forms of heart and circulatory disease - outflow obstruction, obstructive valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, renal artery stenosis, depleted intravascular volume; Also, liver and kidney disorders. In elderly patients and those with kidney disease, blood levels of electrolytes should be monitored during course of treatment.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Fluconazole, potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, NSAIDs, rifampicin.

Known Side Effects

Orthostatic effects (effects occurring when a person assumes a standing position), nettle rash and other rashes and itching, migraine, dizziness, muscle pains, abnormal liver function, diarrhoea. In rare cases, hepatitis, anaemia, angoioedema, cough, anaphylactic effects, vasculitis.
