Creon 1000

What is it?

A preparation of pancreatic enzymes, available as clear/brown capsules containing enteric-coated granules, supplying pancreatin equivalent to 600 PhEur units of protease activity, 8,000 PhEur units amylase activity and 10,000 units PhEur units of lipase activity. Alsq, CREON 25000, available as clear/orange capsules containing enteric-coated granules, supplying pancreatin equivalent to 1,000 PhEur units of protease activity, 18,000 PhEur units of amylase activity and 25,000 PhEur units of lipase activity. Also, CREON 40000, available as clear/ brown capsules containing enteric- coated granules, supplying pancreatin equivalent to 1, 600 PhEur units of protease activity, 25,000 PhEur units of amylase activity and 40,000 PhEur units of lipase activity.

Medical Uses

Insufficient secretion of pancreatic digestive enzymes.

Dosage

Adults and children, 1 or 2 Creon 1000 capsules with meals as starting dose, increasing gradually if necessary, according to response. Creon 25000 or Creon 40000, 1 capsule as starting dose taken with meal each day, increasing gradually, according to response, if required. Capsules should either be swallowed whole or granules mixed with food and swallowed. Do not chew.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, patients should drink adequately to maintain hydration. Monitor patients who develop abdominal symptoms, especially those on high doses of lipase (i. e. greater than 10,000 units per kg of body weight each day) - doses may need to be reviewed.

Avoid Use

Allergy to pork protein, early acute pancreatitis.

Known Side Effects

Skin effects, irritation in perianal area, gastrointestinal upset, potential fibrosing colonopathy. Rarely, high levels of uric acid in blood or urine.
