Crinone
What is it?
A hormonal, progestogen preparation available as a vaginal gel containing 4% or 8% of progesterone, with applicator.
Medical Uses
Dysfunctional bleeding from the womb when ovulation is absent, premenstrual syndrome, disorders in which there is a deficiency of progesterone, hormone replacement therapy (with oestrogen), infertility caused by inadequate secretion of progesterone by the corpus luteum of the ovary, IVF treatment when ovulatory cycles are normal but there is infertility caused by tubal damage, endometriosis or other factor, secondary amenorrhoea (absence of menstrual cycles which had been established previously).
Dosage
Women, Crinone 4%, bleeding, premenstrual syndrome, secondary amenorrhoea, 1 applicatorful of gel inserted into the vagina starting on day 15 and then repeated every second day until day 25; HRT, progesterone deficiency, 1 applicatorful every other day for a minimum of 12 days each cycle. Crinone 8%, infertility, 1 applicatorful of gel each day beginning after ovulation or on day 18 to 21; IVF, 1 applicatorful of gel each day and continuing for 30 days if pregnancy suspected.
Special Care
Liver disorders.
Avoid Use
Children, porphyria (a group of inherited disorders involving production of porphyrins), abnormal vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, breast cancer.
