Cyprostat
What is it?
An anti-androgen preparation used to treat prostate cancer, a type which is hormone-dependent and develops under the influence of the male sex hormone, androgen. The drug blocks androgens produced by the adrenal glands and testes. Cyprostat is available in the form of tablets of 2 strengths; white scored tablets, marked BV within a hexagon, contain 50mng cyproterone acetate. White scored tablets, marked LA within a hexagon, contain 100mg cyproterone acetate.
Medical Uses
Long-term palliative treatment of cancer of the prostate gland, short- term treatment for hormonal flare up (testosterone flare) associated with antagonists to LHRH in treatment of tumour, hot flushes occasioned by medical or surgical castration.
Dosage
Adult men, long-term palliative treatment, 20010 300mg each day in 2 or 3 divided doses taken immediately after meals; testosterone flare, 300mg each day in 2 to 3 divided doses immediately following meals; hot flushes, 50 to 150mg each day in 1 to 3 divided doses after meals.
Special Care
Diabetes, liver disease, history of thrombosis, severe persistent depression, Sickle cell anaemia. Tests on liver function and checks on haemoglobin levels are needed before and during course of treatment. Drug should be withdrawn if liver toxicity develops.
Known Side Effects
Weariness, infertility, depression, liver disorders and toxicity, breast enlargement, anaemia, weight changes, osteoporosis, allergic responses, shortness of breath, thromboembolic changes, alteration in pattern of hair growth.
