What is it?

A synthetic form of prostaglandin (a naturally occurring hormone-like substance present in many body tissues) which inhibits the secretion of gastric juice and promotes the healing of ulcers. It is produced in the form of white, hexagonal tablets, containing 200µg of misoprostol, and marked SEARLE 1461.

Medical Uses

Stomach and duodenal ulcers, ulceration caused by NSAIDs, prevention of NSAID ulceration.

Dosage

Adults, 4 tablets each day with meals, in divided doses, with last taken at bedtime for 1 to 2 months. Prevention of ulcers, 1 tablet 2, 3 or 4 times each day during the period that NSAID is being taken.

Special Care

Women should use effective contraception, patients with circulatory diseases including peripheral or coronary vascular disease and cerebrovascular disease.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, women planning pregnancy, breast-feeding.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, diarrhoea, pain in abdomen, vaginal bleeding and disturbance of menstrual cycle, dizziness, rash.
