Daktarin

What is it?

An anti-fungal gel containing 2% miconazole. Also, DAKTARIN CREAM, containing 2% miconazole nitrate.

Medical Uses

Gel, superinfections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, fungal infections of the mouth, pharynx and gastrointestinal tract. Cream, infections of the skin or nails caused by Gram-positive bacteria or fungi.

Dosage

Adults, gel, 5 to 10m1 taken by mouth each day; children, gel, aged under 2 years, 2.5m1 twice each day; aged 2 to 6 years, 5m1 twice each day; 6 years and over, 5m14 times each day. All doses taken by mouth. If the infection is localised in the mouth, the gel can be applied directly to the area, retaining gel in mouth rather than swallowing. Treatment should continue for 2 days after symptoms have cleared. Cream, adults and children, skin, apply twice each day; nails, apply once or twice each day. In both cases continue treatment for 10 days after symptoms have cleared.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding.

Avoid Use

Liver disorders.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Phenytoin, astemizole, oral hypoglycaemic drugs, warfarin, tacrolimus, terfenadine, cisapride.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset; rarely, allergic response.
