Dalmane

What is it?

A long-acting benzodiazepine (a hypnotic) available as capsules in two different strengths containing flurazepam as hydrochloride. Yellow/ grey capsules marked ICN 15 contain 15mg; black/grey capsules marked ICN 30 contain 30mg.

Medical Uses

Short-term treatment of severe or disabling insomnia.

Dosage

Adults, 15-30mg at bedtime, elderly persons, 15mg.

Special Care

Chronic liver, kidney or lung disease, acute, narrow-angle glaucoma, elderly persons, bereavement. May impair dexterity and judgement. Should not be used as sole therapy for depression or anxiety. To be withdrawn gradually.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, labour, acute lung disease, depression of the respiration, obsessional and phobic states, chronic psychosis. Also, myasthenia gravis, severe liver disorders, sleep apnoea syndrome.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Anticonvulsants, CNS depressants, alcohol.

Known Side Effects

Confusion, vertigo, drowsiness, ataxia, light-headedness, gastrointestinal upsets, skin rashes, weakness in muscles, hypotension, disturbance in vision. Urine retention, changes in libido, impaired ability to perform tasks and in exercise of judgement; rarely, jaundice and effects on blood. Dependence is possible especially at higher doses and with longer treatment periods.
