Dantrium
What is it?
A muscle relaxant and hydantoin available as capsules in two different strengths containing dantrolene sodium. Light brown/orange capsules, marked 0030 contain 25mg and light brown/orange capsules marked 0033 contain 100mg.
Medical Uses
Severe and persistent spasticity of skeletal muscle.
Dosage
Adults, 25mg each day at start, gradually increasing to a maximum of 100mg 4 times each day. Doses should be individually titrated for each patient according to manufacturer's instructions and under medical supervision.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, lung or heart disease. Liver to be checked before and 6 weeks after the start of treatment.
Avoid Use
Liver disease, acute spasm of muscles, in circumstances where spasticity is useful for movement, posture or balance.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cns depressants, alcohol.
Known Side Effects
Diarrhoea (halt treatment if severe), malaise, drowsiness, weakness, fatigue, headache, constipation, chills, nausea, fever, rash, anorexia, sleeplessness, frequent urination, swallowing difficulty. Rarely, raised heartbeat rate, blood pressure swings, blood in urine, formation of crystals in urine, urine retention or incontinence, shortness of breath, toxic effects on liver, fluid on lungs, pericarditis (inflammation of pericardium).
