Ddavp
What is it?
An analogue of the hormone vasopressin and an antidiuretic compound, available as scored, white tablets in two different strengths containing 0.1mg or 0.2mg of desmopressin acetate each marked with strength. Also, DDVAP NASAL SOLUTION containing 100µg per ml of desmopressin acetate as nasal drops. Also, DDVAP INJECTION, available in ampoules containing 4µg per ml of desmopressin acetate. Usedfor: cranial diabetes insipidus, excretion of excessive quantities of urine (polyuria) and extreme thirst due to imbalance following surgical removal of the pituitary gland. Noeturia (passing of large quantities of urine at night) caused by multiple sclerosis used when other treatments have not been successful in patients aged 5 to 65 years.
Dosage
Diabetes insipidus, adults and children, tablets, 0.1mg 3 times each day at first with a usual maintenance dose in the order of 0.1 to 0.2mg 3 tines daily. Nasal solution, adults, 0.1 to 0.2ml, 1 to 2 times each day; children, 0.05 to 0.2ml each day with possible lower doses for babies. Diagnosis of diabetes insipidus, adults and children, a single dose of 0.2ml with drinking restricted to 0.5ml of fluid from 1 hour before to 8 hours after the dose is administered. To test kidney function, adults, a dose of 0.4ml; children less than 12 months, 0.1ml; children aged 1 to 15 years, 0.2ml. Injection, adults, 1 to 4µg by intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection once each day; children, 0.4 to 1µg each day. Nocturia, adults and children, nasal spray, 0.1 to 0.2ml administered at bedtime with only one dose in each 24 hour period.
Special Care
Pregnancy, electrolyte imbalances, heart or kidney disease, cystic fibrosis. Care should be taken to avoid excess intake/generation of fluid. Alcohol abuse or psychological disorder as a cause of polydipsia should be excluded before treatment begins.
Avoid Use
High blood pressure, insufficient heart function.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Chlorpromazine, indomethacin, carbamazepine, tricyclic antidepressants.
Known Side Effects
Headache, nausea, stomach ache, fits caused by low levels of sodium in blood.
