Desmotabs

What is it?

A preparation which is a vasopressin analogue ie a synthetic copy of vasopressin or antidiuretic hormone which acts to constrict blood vessels and reduces urine secretion by increasing the amount of water reabsorbed by the kidneys. Available as scored, white tablets marked 0.2 containing 0.2mg of desmopressin acetate.

Medical Uses

Night time bed-wetting in children and adults.

Dosage

Adults (aged up to 65 years) and children over 5 years old, 1 tablet taken at bedtime as starting dose, increasing to 2 tablets only if this is ineffective. After 3 months of continuous therapy, a trial period of 1 week or longer without treatment should be tried and the position reassessed.

Special Care

In addition to treatment, drinks should be restricted in the evening and for 8 hours after taking the tablet. Pregnancy, kidney disorders, heart and circulatory disease, electrolyte imbalances, cystic fibrosis. Alcohol abuse and psychogenic causes should be excluded before treatment begins and patient should be advised to avoid excess drinking of fluids.

Avoid Use

High blood pressure, inadequate heart function.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Chlorpromazine, indomethacin, carbamazepine, tricyclic antidepresssants.

Known Side Effects

Nausea, headache, stomach aches, convulsions connected with low blood sodium levels.
