Dexedrine cd

What is it?

A controlled drug and a form of amphetamine which is a sympathomimetic (i. e. something that mimics the effect of organ stimulation by the sympathetic nervous system which is part of the autonomic nervous system). It is available as scored, white tablets containing 5mg of dexamphetamine sulphate, marked EVANS DB5.

Medical Uses

Narcolepsy (a condition in which a person suddenly, abnormally and uncontrollably falls asleep), hyperkinetic (impulsive/hyperactive) conditions in children receiving specialist treatment and supervision.

Dosage

Elderly persons, 5mg each day at first, increasing by 5mg after 1 week, if required to optimal dose, as advised by physician. Adults, 10mg each day in divided doses at first, increasing after 1 week by 10mng per day, if required and then at further weekly intervals until optimal dose is achieved. The maximum daily dose is 60mg each day in divided doses. Children aged 3 to 5 years, 2.5mg each day at first, increasing, if required, at weekly intervals by 2.5mg; children aged 6 to 12 years, 5 to 10mg each day at first, increasing, if required, at weekly intervals by 5mg each day to a usual maximum of 20 mg daily

Special Care

Pregnancy, epilepsy, family history of impairment in muscle tone (dystonia).

Avoid Use

Porphyria (an inherited disorder involving abnormal production of porphyrins), glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart and circulatory disease, over-active thyroid gland, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (an abnormal condition characterized by tics and grimaces, involuntary limb movements and sometimes, grunting, shouting or snorting), dystonias, hyperexcitability, history of substance abuse.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Disulfiram a guanethidine, adrenoreceptnr blocking drugs, MAOIs, lithium, methyltyrosine, TCADs.

Known Side Effects

Central nervous system effects, dry mouth, gastrointestinal disturbances, sleeplessness, kidney damage, raised blood pressure, sweating, rapid heart beat, damage to heart muscle, restlessness, slowed growth in children, anorexia, euphoria, dependence, muscle effects.
