Didronel PMO
What is it?
A biphosphonate/calcium supplement available as white capsule-shaped tablets containing 400mg etidronate disodium marked NE and 406; with 1250mg calcium carbonate (Cacit) as pink effervescent tablets with an orange taste. Also, DIDRONEL TABLETS, which are white, rectangular-shaped and contain 200mg of etidronate disodium, marked 402 and P&G.
Medical Uses
Didronel PMO, treatment and prevention of postmenopausal and other forms of osteoporosis, including that which may arise from longterm corticosteroid therapy. Didronal tablets, Paget's disease of bone.
Dosage
Adults, Didronal PMO, 1 tablet daily for 14 days taken with water in the middle of a 4-hour fast, followed by 1 Cacit tablet daily in water for 76 days. The 90 day cycle maybe repeated as needed. Didronal tablets, 5mg per kg of body weight daily taken in the middle of a 4-hour fast with 6 months as maximum treatment period.
Special Care
Enterocolitis, moderate kidney disease, ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, withdraw treatment if patient sustains a fracture.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, osteomalacia, severe kidney disease.
Known Side Effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, gastrointestinal upset. Rarely, blood changes, allergic reactions, skin effects, tingling, numbness, 'pins and needles', confusion.
