Duphalac

What is it?

A laxative preparation available as a solution containing 3.35g of lactulose per 5ml of liquid.

Medical Uses

Portal systemic encephalopathy (PSE), constipation.

Dosage

Adults, PSE, starting dose, 30 to 50ml 3 times each day; dose is adjusted according to response. Constipation, 15ml twice each day. Children, constipation, aged less than 12 months, 2.5ml twice each day; aged 1 to 4 years, 5ml twice each day; aged 5 to 10 years, 10ml twice each day.

Special Care

Patients with intolerance to lactose.

Avoid Use

Obstruction of the intestine, galsctosaemia.

Known Side Effects

Wind, meteorism (build up of abdominal or intestinal gas, causing distention).
