Dyspamet

What is it?

An H2 blocker available as a suspension containing 200mg of cimetidine per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Persistent, acid-related dyspeptic conditions, stomach and duodenal ulcer, borderline ulceration, oesophageal reflux, conditions in which a lowering of stomach acid is desirable.

Dosage

Adults, 10ml twice each day, with breakfast and at bedtime. Minimum recommended course, 4 weeks. Children over 12 months, 25 to 30mg per kg of body weight as divided dose.

Special Care

Exclude malignancy, pregnancy, breastfeeding, impaired kidneys. Monitor if treatment is long-term.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Phenytoin, theophylline, oral anticoagulants, lignocaine given intravenously.

Known Side Effects

Tiredness, dizziness, rash, diarrhoea, abnormal enlargement of breasts in males, confusion. Liver damage, which is reversible, may sometimes occur. Fever, muscle and joint pain, acute pancreatitis, headache, kidney inflammation, blood effects, heart block, raised or lowered heart beat and anaphylaxis have been rarely recorded.
