Dytac

What is it?

A potassium-sparing diuretic available as maroon coloured capsules containing 50mg of triainterene, all marked DYTAC.

Medical Uses

Oedema in congestive heart failure, liver or kidney disease; may be used as sole therapy or in conjunction with other diuretic drugs, to prevent loss of potassium.

Dosage

3 to 5 capsules each day in divided doses. Use on alternate days after first week of trteatment.

Special Care

Elderly, pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease, gout, acidosis, diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease related to diabetes).

Avoid Use

Addison's disease, raised blood potassium levels, progessive kidney or liver disease.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, antihypertensives, indomethacin.

Known Side Effects

Weakness, headache, cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, dry mouth, rash, blood dyscrasias (abnormal blood or bone marrow condition e. g. leukaemia), metabolic disturbances.
