Eltroxin
What is it?
A preparation of thyroid hormone containing thyroxine sodium, available as white tablets of 3 different strengths: 25µg, 50µg and 100µg, each marked with name and strength.
Medical Uses
Hypothyroidism in children and adults, including cretinism and myxoedema.
Dosage
Adults, 50-100µg each day in first instance increasing every 3 to 4 weeks by 50µg according to response until optimum dose is achieved. Maximum dose is 100 to 200µg each day. Children 25µg each day in the first instance, increasing every 2 to 4 weeks by 25µg according to response. Dose should then be slightly reduced.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, elderly, patients with weak hearts or with reduced adrenal gland function.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anticonvulsants, sympathomimetics, antidiabetics, tricyclics, cardiac glycosides, anticoagulants.
Known Side Effects
Tachycardia, muscular cramps, headache, anginal chest pains, diarrhoea, sweating, restlessness, excitability, flushing, arrhythmias, severe weight loss.
