EMLA

What is it?

A local anaesthetic preparation produced in the form of a cream containing 25mg lignocaine, 25mg prilocaine per g.

Medical Uses

Local anaesthesia of skin and genital area (removal of genital warts).

Dosage

Adults and children, minor surgery, 2g applied to affected area for a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 5 hours. For larger areas, 1.5-3g per 10cm2 of skin for minimum of 2 hours and maximum of 5 hours. (Cream is applied as a thick layer under a dressing). Genital warts, 10g applied for 5 to 10 minutes before surgical removal.

Avoid Use

Infants under 1 year, patients with atopic dermatitis, on wounds or mucous membranes.

Known Side Effects

Local slight skin reactions.
