Equasym cd

What is it?

A preparation which stimulates the central nervous system available as scored, white tablets in three different strengths, containing 5mg, 10mg or 20mg of methylphenidate hydrochloride, respectively, each marked Medeva and with strength.

Medical Uses

Childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Dosage

Children over 6 years, 5mg once or twice each day, increasing, if needed, at weekly intervals by 5 to l Omg to a maximum of 60mg each day in divided doses, if no improvement is seen in one month of treatment, drug should be withdrawn.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, high blood pressure, epilepsy, emotional and psychotic disorders. To be prescribed under direct supervision of specialist in behavioural disorders in children. Blood pressure, height and weight must be monitored and blood counts carried out if treatment is prolonged. Drug must be carefully withdrawn.

Avoid Use

Children under 6 years, glaucoma, toxicosis of thyroid gland, heart arrhythmias, severe angina, agitation and severe anxiety, family history of Tourettes's syndrome or tics.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Tricyclic antidepressants, alcohol, guanethidine, anticonvulsants, pressor agents, MAOIs, anticoagulants, phenylbutazone.

Known Side Effects

Lowered appetite, gastrointestinal upset, sleeplessness, nervousness, headaches, raised heartbeat, drowsiness, changes in blood pressure, dizziness.
