Erythoped A

What is it?

A preparation of an antibiotic macrolide, available as oval, film- coated yellow tablets containing 500mg of erythromycin as ethyl succinate; ERYTHROPED A sachets contain lg in the form of granules. Also, ERYTHROPED SF, a sugar- free suspension containing 125mg of erythromycin, as ethyl succinate, per 5ml. Also, ERYTHROPED FORTE SF, available as a sugar-free suspension containing 500mg of erythromycin as ethyl succinate per 5ml. Also, ERYTHROPED P. I. SF, a sugar-freesuspension containing 125mg of erythromycin as ethyl succinate per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Infections sensitive to erythromycin, acne.

Dosage

Adults and children over 8 years, lg twice each day. Children under 2 years, 250mg; aged 2 to 8 years, 500mg, all twice each day. Alternatively, children may be given 30mg per kg of body weight (or up to 50mg per kg in severe cases) each day in divided doses.

Special Care

Myasthenia gravis (a severe autoimmune disorder affecting muscles), liver disease.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Digoxin, midazolam, zopiclone, anticoagulants taken by mouth, pimozide, phenytoin, astemizole, disopyramide, alfentanil, theophylline, terfenadine, triazolam, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, ergot derivatives, quinidine, cisapride, bromocriptine, hexobarbitone, tacrolimus, statins. valproate,

Known Side Effects

Allergic reactions, gastrointestinal upset, cholestatic jaundice.
