Estring
What is it?
An oestrogen preparation available as a vaginal ring releasing 7.5µg of oestradiol hemihydrate every 24 hours.
Medical Uses
Atrophic vaginitis (inflammation and irritation of vaginal tissues) following the menopause.
Dosage
Women only, insert 1 ring high into vagina and replace with new ring after 3 months. Treatment can be continued for a maximum period of 2 years.
Special Care
If discomfort or vaginal bleeding occurs, exclude other causes of symptoms such as infection, ulceration, unresponsive atrophic vaginitis. Special care with thromboembolic disorders, Cushings syndrome, porphyria (inherited disorder involving porphyrins), endometrial hyperplasia (overgrowth of cells of endometrium). Monitoring should take place if treatment is long-term.
Avoid Use
Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, severe inflammation and ulceration, cancers which are influenced by oestrogen.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Other preparationsinserted into the vagina, steroids.
Known Side Effects
Local irritation, itching, inflammation and infection of urogenital tract, ulceration, discomfort and mild pain in abdomen.
