Euglucon

What is it?

An oral hypoglycaemic preparation which is a sulphonylurea, available as white tablets of 2 different strengths. Tablets marked EU and 2.5 contain 2.5mg of glibenclamide and scored, oblong, white tablets, marked EU-BM on both sides, contain 5mg of glibenclamid.

Diabetes which develops in adults (maturity-onset or non-insulin dependent type II diabetes).

Dosage

Adults, 5mg each day at first, at breakfast time, increasing if required by 2.5mg each day at intervals of 1 week. Maximum daily dose 15mg.

Special Care

Kidney failure, the elderly.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, juvenile, growth-onset or unstable brittle diabetes (all forms of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus), severe liver or kidney disease, ketoacidosis, stress, infections, surgery, endocrine disorders.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Risk of hypoglycaemia with: sulfonamides, fibrates, fluconazole, aspirin, alcohol, chloramphenicol, MAOIs, NSAIDs, miconazole, oral anticoagulants, β-blockers, ACE inhibitors, prohenecid, phenylbutazone, cimetidine. Risk of hyperglycaemia with: diuretics, progestogens, oestrogens, contraceptive pills, phenothiazines, derivatives of nicotinic acid, thyroid hormones, phenytoi, danazol, sympathomimetics, calcium antagonists, corticosteroids, isoniazid.

Known Side Effects

Allergic reactions including skin rash, hypoglycaemia, disturbance of vision, liver disorders, gastrointestinal effects, headache, abdominal pains, malaise, blood effects, trembling, dizziness, raised liver enzymes, confusion, drowsiness.
