What is it?

A preparation which selectively modulates oestrogen receptors, available as elliptically shaped, white, film-coated tablets containing 60mg of raloxifene hydrochloride, all marked 4165.

Medical Uses

Prevention and treatment of oesteoporosis following the menopause.

Dosage

Women, 1 tablet each day.

Special Care

History of hypertriglyceridaemia (elevated levels of triglycerides (fats) in blood) caused by oestrogen, breast cancer; women should ensure that their intake of vitamin D and calcium is adequate.

Avoid Use

Liver or serious kidney disease, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, history of venous thrombosis, prolonged immobility, cancer of the endometrium (lining of the womb).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Cholestyramine, anticoagulants taken by mouth, oestrogens acting internally.

Known Side Effects

Fall in blood platelets, cramp type pains in legs, fluid retention in extremities, flushes. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
