What is it?
A narcotic antagonist and controlled drug, produced in a variety of forms. White, film-coated tablets contain 25mg pentazocine hydrochloride, marked Sterwin and Fortral. FORTRAL CAPSULES marked FORTRAL 50 and coloured yellow/ grey, contain 50mg of pentazocine hydrochloride. FORTRAL INJECTION contain 30mg pentazocine (as acetate) per ml in ampoules. FORTRAL SUPPOSITORIES contain 50mg of pentazocine as acetate.
Medical Uses
Relief of pain.
Dosage
Adults, tablets or capsules, 25100mg after meals every 3 to 4 hours; injection, 30-60mg by intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection every 3 to 4 hours; suppositories, 1 when required with a maximum of 4 in 24 hours. Children, tablets, aged 6 to 12 years, 25mg every 3 to 4 hours. Injection, children 1 to 12 years, either a maximum of 1mg/kg body weight as single dose by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, or 0.5mg/kg body weight given intravenously as single dose. Capsules and suppositories are not for use in children.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver, kidney or respiratory diseases, previous fits, porphyria (a rare inherited disorder of metabolism), enlarged prostate gland, inflammatory bowel disease or obstruction of bowel, heart attack, underactive thyroid gland, insufficiency of hormones of the adrenal (cortex) glands.
Avoid Use
Children under 1 year of age, patients with brain injury or disease, raised intracranial pressure, narcotic dependent patients, depressed respiration.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Other narcotic drugs, alcohol, MAOIs.
Known Side Effects
Nausea, dizziness, sedation, drug-induced symptoms of psychosis.
