What is it?
An anticancer drug which is a synthetic version of the female sex hormone, progestngen. It is produced in the form of a suspension in vials for injection, containing 200mg medroxyprogesterone acetate per ml and Also, in tablets of 3 strengths. White tablets contain 100mg; white scored tablets contain 250mg, marked with tablet strength. White, scored, elongated tablets contain 500mg and are marked FCE 500.
Medical Uses
Cancer of breast, endometrium (womb), kidney cells and prostate gland.
Dosage
Adults, injection - according to manufacturer's instructions; tablets, breast cancer, 1-1.5g each day; kidney, endometrium, prostate cancer, 100500mg each day.
Special Care
Epilepsy, diabetes, porphyria (inherited metabolic disorder involving porphyrins), kidney or heart disease, asthma, migraine, previous depression.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, patients with thromboembolism, liver disease, thrombophlebitis (inflamed veins), hypercalcaemia (raised blood calcium levels).
Known Side Effects
Abnormal menstruation, abnormal production of breast milk, corticoid symptoms, mastodynia.
