Fentazin

What is it?

A potent antipsyehotic preparation and group III phenothiazine (a piperazine), produced as tablets of 2 strengths. White, sugarcoated tablets, coded 1 C, contain 2mg of perphenazine; white, sugar-coated tablets coded 2C contain 4mg of perphenazine.

Medical Uses

Various serious psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, psychoses, anxiety, nervous stress, vomiting and nausea.

Dosage

Adults, 12mg each day in divided doses with a maximum of 24mg daily; elderly persons, quarter to half the full dose.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breast-feeding, epilepsy, glaucoma, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, hypothyroidism (underaetive thyroid gland), myasthenia gravis (serious, chronic disorder characterised by severe muscle weakness and fatigue), cardiovascular disease, phaeochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour), enlarged prostate gland.

Avoid Use

Children, patients with depressed bone marrow or in comatose states. For drug interactions and side effects, consult manufacturer's prescribing notes.
