Fermaphron
What is it?
A preparation which is a hyaluronan, designed to be injected intra-articularly into the space around a joint. It comprises a fluid which helps to restore the viscous and elastic characteristics of the synovial fluid bathing joints. In osteoarthritis, this improves lubrication and shock absorption and hence helps to relieve pain from inflamed and damaged joints. Available as pre-filled syringes containing 10mg of sodium hyaluronate per ml.
Medical Uses
To relieve pain in knee joints affected by osteoarthritis.
Dosage
Adults, 2ml injected directly into knee joint once each week for 5 weeks. A course comprises 5 injections and may be repeated every 6 months.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding.
Avoid Use
Children, skin disease or infection at site of injection.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Other preparations injected into the joint.
Known Side Effects
Short-lived pain, swelling around injection site. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety Medicines (CSM).
