Fibro-Vein
What is it?
A sclerosant (hardening) preparation available as a solution of various strengths, in ampoules for injection containing 0.2%, 0.5%, 1% or 3% sodium tetradecyl sulphate.
Medical Uses
Compression sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins in the leg.
Dosage
Adults, large veins,025ml to 1ml of 3% solution injected directly into the interior of a section of vein, followed immediately by compression of the area. A maximum of 4 sites can be treated at any one time. Small veins, 0.25ml to 1ml of 0.5% or 1% solution, used in same way as for large veins with a maximum of 10 sites being treated at any one time. Venules (very small veins), 0.1 ml to 1ml of 0.2% solution, used in same way with a maximum of 10 sites being treated at any one time.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding; previous allergies - emergency equipment for action in event of anaphylaxis must be readily to hand. Treatment must only be carried out by physician skilled in this form of therapy, exercising great care.
Avoid Use
Women taking oral contraceptives, obese patients, poor circulation due to weak valves, diabetes which is not under control, acute, superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation of veins), varicose veins associated with abdominal or pelvic tumours.
Known Side Effects
Anaphylaxis, localised reactions at injection sites.
