Flixotide Diskhaler

What is it?

A corticosteroid preparation containing fluticasone propionate for use with diskhaler. 50, 100, 250 and 500µg fluticasone propionate disks are for use with breath-operated diskhaler delivery system. Also, FLIXOTIDE ACCUHALER 50, 100, 250 and 500µg fluticasone propionate per dose are for use with a breath-actuated, delivery system. Also, FLIXOTIDE INHALER, delivering 25µg of fluticasone proprionate per metered dose, for use with inhaler. Also, FLIXOTIDE EVOHALER, delivering 50, 125 or 250µg of fluticasone proprionate per metered dose, for use with inhaler. Also, FLIXOTIDE NEBULES, single use ampoules for use with nebuliser containing 0.5mg or 2mg of fluticasone proprionate per 2ml.

Medical Uses

All preparations except nebules, prevention of bronchial asthma. Flixotide Nebules are used for prevention of chronic severe asthma attacks in adults and for acute flare-up of asthma in children.

Dosage

Adults, all preparations except nebules, 100-1000µg twice each day; children over 4 years of age, 50-1 OOµg twice each day. Flixotide Nebules, adults and children over 16 years, 2mg (2000µg) twice each day using nebuliser; children aged 4 to 16 years, 1mg (1000µg) twice each day using the 0.5mg nebules

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, transferring from other (systemic) steroid drugs taken orally, those with history of, or with active tuberculosis. Risk of systemic steroid effects and adrenal gland suppression on longterm treatment - monitoring required. Height of children an prolonged therapy should be monitored.

Avoid Use

Children under 4 years of age.

Known Side Effects

Candidiasis (a yeast-like fungal infection) of throat and mouth, hoarseness, occasional unexplained bronchospasm. Rarely, rash, fluid retention in peripheral tissues, local allergic responses. Any adverse side effects associated with Flixotide Evohaler should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
