Frusol
What is it?
A loop diuretic (acting on the loop of Henle in the kidney), available as solutions containing 20mg, 40mg or 50mg of frusemide per 5ml.
Medical Uses
Oedema (fluid retention).
Dosage
Adults, 40mg per day in one dose to start, taken in the morning then adjusted according to response. Children, 1 to 3mg per kg of body weight each day to a maximum of 40mg daily.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disorder, diabetes, gout, enlarged prostate gland or impaired urination. Potassium supplements may be necessary.
Avoid Use
Anuria (absence of urination), electrolyte deficiency, precomatose conditions linked to liver cirrhosis.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
NSAIDs, digitalis, antihypertensives, aminoglycosides, lithium, cephalosporins.
Known Side Effects
Gout, rash, gastrointestinal upset.
