Guarem
What is it?
A bulking agent comprising dispersible granules of guar gum available in sachets to be mixed with food or added to water.
Medical Uses
Dumping syndrome (symptoms experienced by patients who have undergone surgery to remove part of stomach which start soon after eating - dizziness, weakness, nausea, copious sweating); additional treatment, along with dietary measures, oral antidiabetic drugs or insulin, in control of diabetes.
Dosage
Adults, 1 sachet 3 times each day either mixed with suitable food or added to 200ml of fluid. If mixed with food, person should Also, drink at least 200ml of fluid.
Special Care
Diabetic patients require monitoring of glucose levels at start of treatment and may need adjustments to their diabetic medication.
Avoid Use
Children, patients with swallowing difficulties, obstruction of intestine, disease/disorders of the oesophagus.
Known Side Effects
Abdominal wind and distension, diarrhoea.
