Heminevrin

What is it?

A hypnotic, sedative preparation produced in the form of capsules and as a syrup. Grey-brown capsules contain 192mg chlormethiazole in miglyol, 1 capsule being equivalent to 5ml of syrup. Syrup contains 250mg chlormethiazole edisylate per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Insomnia in elderly persons, short-lived therapy only. Sedation in elderly patients with senile psychosis, anxiety, confusion, disturbance of sleep, tension, alcohol withdrawal.

Dosage

Adults, insomnia, l or 2 capsules or 5 to 10ml of syrup at bedtime. Restlessness and agitation, 1 capsule or 5ml of syrup 3 times each day. For alcohol withdrawal symptoms, 3 capsules 4 times on first day, reducing daily over 6 days to final dose - consult manufacturer's instructions.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly, lung, liver or kidney disease, drug or alcohol abuse which is ongoing (must not be given to patients who continue to drink alcohol). Patients must be warned that their dexterity and judgement will be affected.

Avoid Use

Children, acute lung disease.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Other central nervous system sedatives, alcohol, propranolol, cimetidine, diazoxide.

Known Side Effects

Blocked and sore nose, sore eyes, headaches, gastro-intestinal upset, rashes, sedation, judgement and performance of skilled tasks (e. g. driving) is impaired, confusion, agitation, anaphylactic-type allergic reactions.
