Humalog Mix 25

What is it?

A combined preparation of very rapid-acting and slower-acting insulins, comprising 25% insulin lispro and 75% insulin lispro protamine suspension, 100iu per ml, available in preloaded pens and in cartridges for Humapen and Autopen devices. Also, HUMALOGMIX50, comprising a biphasic mix of 50% insulin lispro and 50% insulin lispro protamine suspension, 100iu per ml, available in pre-loaded pen device.

Dosage

According to individual patient requirements, usually self-delivered by subcutaneous injection either just before or just after meals. Starts to act within 15 minutes and effects continue for about 22 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, 1-blockers, cortico trophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes in volving fat deposition) at injection site.
