Human Mixtard

What is it?

Combined preparations of human insulins with different durations of activity in various ratios. Comprising highly purified human insulin (pyr) as neutral soluble insulin and isophane insulin, in following ratios: HUMAN MIXTARD 10: 10% neutral, soluble human insulin: 90% isophane insulin. HUMAN MIXTARD 20: 20% neutral, soluble human insulin: 80% isophane insulin. HUMAN MIXTARD 30: 30% neutral, soluble human insulin: 70% isophane insulin. HUMANMIXTM D 40: 40% neutral, soluble human insulin: 60% isophane insulin. HUMAN MIXTARD 50: 50% neutral, soluble human insulin: 50% isophane insulin. Available in preloaded pens, cartridges for pen devices, vials and other formats, depending upon type.

Medical Uses

Diabetes.

Dosage

According to individual patient requirements; usually self-delivered by subcutaneous injection. Effects last for about 24 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, β-blockers, cortico trophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes in volving fat deposition) at injection site.
