Human Velosulin
What is it?
A preparation of short-acting, human insulin comprising neutral, soluble human insulin (pyr) which is highly purified, 100iu per ml, available in vials for injection.
Medical Uses
Diabetes.
Dosage
According to individual patient requirements; usually self-delivered by bolus subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous injection or, by subcutaneous infusion into the abdominal wall using an insulin infusion pump. Dosages are less if patient is changing from injection to infusion delivery, effects last for about 8 hours.
Special Care
Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, β-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.
Known Side Effects
Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site.
