Humulin Lente

What is it?

A combined preparation of intermediate-acting human insulin comprising 70% crystalline human insulin (prb) zinc suspension and 30% amorphous insulin, 100iu per ml, available in vials for injection.

Medical Uses

Diabetes.

Dosage

According to individual patient requirements; usually self-administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Effects last for about 23 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOls, alcohol, β-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site.
