Hyalgan

What is it?

An intra-articular preparation (ie used within joints) which is a hyaluronan. Available as a solution in prepared syringes comprising 20mg of hyaluronic acid as sodium salt per 2ml.

Medical Uses

Long-acting pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis affecting the knee.

Dosage

Adults, 2ml injected into the knee once a week for 5 weeks. Course of injections may then be repeated at a minimum of 6 month intervals.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe joint inflammation. Excess fluid should be withdrawn from knee before injection.

Avoid Use

Skin condition or infection at injection site, patients with known sensitivity to bird (chicken) proteins.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Quaternary ammonium disinfectants.

Known Side Effects

Swelling and heat at site of injection, pain which is usually short- lived.
