Hypurin Porcine Neutral

What is it?

A preparation of short-acting insulin, pork neutral insulin which is highly purified. Available as 100iu per ml in vials or cartridges for use with autopen device.

Medical Uses

Diabetes.

Dosage

Usually self-administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection according to individual patient requirements. May Also, be given intravenously for a very rapid effect. Effects last for about 6 to 8 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type, etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, β-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site.
