Hytrin

What is it?

An antihypertensive preparation which is a selective Bi-blocker produced as tablets of 4 different strengths, all containing terazosin (as hydrochloride). White 1mg, yellow 2mg, brown 5mg and blue 10mg tablets are all marked with triangle- shaped symbols and logo.

Medical Uses

High blood pressure, additional therapy for urine obstruction caused by benign enlargement of the prostate gland.

Dosage

Adults, high blood pressure, 1mg taken at bedtime at first then gradually doubling at weekly intervals. The usual maintenance dose is in the order of 2-10mg taken once each day. Additional therapy for urinary obstruction, 1mg taken at bedtime at first, increasing gradually once a week to 5 to 10mg each day, as needed.

Special Care

In patients liable to fainting.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Other anti-hypertensive drugs, diuretics.

Known Side Effects

Initial dose may cause fainting, low blood pressure on rising from lying down (postural hypotension), dizziness, weariness, blocked, stuffy nose, blurring of vision, fluid retention and swelling of hands and feet, sleepiness, weakness, palpitations.
