Ilosone
What is it?
A macrolide antibiotic preparation available as red/ivory capsules containing 250mg erythromycin estolate and marked DISTA.
Medical Uses
Respiratory and urinary tract infections, soft tissue, skin, dental infections, infections of the middle ear, acne.
Dosage
Adults, infections and acne, 250mg every 6 hours with a maximum of 4g each day. Children, infections only, 20-50mg per kg body weight each day in divided doses.
Special Care
Patients with myasthenia gravis (a serious and chronic disorder characterised by great muscular weakness and fatigue).
Avoid Use
Patients with liver disease or disorder, history of jaundice.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anticoagulants taken orally, probenecid, carbamazepine, terfenadine, ergot derivatives, asterrizole, hexobarbital, valproate, cyclosporin, lincomycin, theophylline, phenytoin, alfentanil, clindamycin, midazolam, statins, triazolam, cisapride, disopyramide, brnmocriptine, digoxin.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, allergic responses, cholestatic jaundice.
