Imuran

What is it?

A cytotoxic immunosuppressant preparation, available as film- coated tablets of 2 strengths. Orange tablets contain 25mg of azathioprine, marked Wellcome L3C; yellow tablets contain 50mg of azathioprine, marked Wellcome K7A. Also, IMURAN INJECTION containing 50mg of azathioprine (as sodium salt) produced as powder in vials for reconstitution. Usedfor: severe rheumatoid arthritis, to suppress organ or tissue rejection following transplant operations.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly patients, kidney or liver disease, bruising, bleeding, infections. Blood counts and other monitoring for toxic effects should be carried out.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Warfarin, cytostatics, allopurinol, vaccines, indomethacin, oxypurinol, frusemide, cimetidine, aminosalicylates, thiopurinol, muscle relaxants, captopril.

Known Side Effects

Skin rashes, bone marrow suppression, rashes, gastro-intestinal upset, toxic effects on liver, hair loss, lung effects, allergic responses.
