Indocid PDA

What is it?

A prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor produced as a powder in vials for reconstitution and injection containing 1mg indomethacin (as sodium trihydrate).

Medical Uses

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in premature babies (a condition in which there remains a connection between the aorta and pulmonary artery, the ductus arteriosus, which normally closes after birth).

Dosage

3 intravenous infusions, each given over 20 minutes to half an hour, at intervals of 12 to 24 hours depending upon baby's age, condition and urinary output.

Special Care

Kidney function and plasma levels of electrolytes should be monitored; Also, monitor for bleeding. Coronary heart failure, liver dysfunction, sepsis; babies in whom extracellular volume is low are at increased risk of kidney failure. Signs of infection can be masked.

Avoid Use

Babies with serious kidney disorders, untreated infection, gastrointestinal bleeding or bleeding within the brain, disorders of blood coagulation, thrombocytopenia (a blood disorder in which there are low levels of platelets), necrotising enterocolitis, conditions requiring preservation of patency.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Frusemide, amino- glycosides, digitalis.

Known Side Effects

Bleeding, kidney disorders, worsening infections, retention of fluid, imbalance in electrolyte (salts) levels.
