Insuman Basal

What is it?

A preparation of intermediate-acting insulin, human isophane insulin which is highly purified (crb), available in vials and cartridges for use with pen devices or as pre-prepared pens, containing 100iu per ml.

Medical Uses

Diabetes.

Dosage

Usually self-administered according to individual patient needs, by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, 45 minutes to 1 hour before a meal. Effects last for about 11 to 20 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, β-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
