Insuman Comb

What is it?

Two-phase preparations of human insulin in a variety of ratios, comprising human insulin (crb) as neutral and isophane insulin: INSUMAN COMB 15: 15% neutral and 85% isophane insulin; INSUMAN COMB 25: 25% neutral and 75% isophane insulin; INSUMAN COMB 50: 50% neutral and 50% isophane insulin. Available in vials, cartridges for use with pen devices and pre-prepared pens.

Medical Uses

Diabetes.

Dosage

All preparations are usually self administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, according to individual patient requirements. Insuman Comb 15 and Insuman Comb 25 are injected 30 to 45 minutes before eating a meal. The effects of Insuman Comb 15 last for about 11 to 20 hours; those of Insuman Comb 25 for about 12 to 19 hours. Insuman Comb 50 is injected 20 to 30 minutes before eating a meal and the effects last for about 12 to 16 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, β-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
