ISMO
What is it?
A nitrate preparation available as white tablets in 3 different strengths containing 10mg of isosorbide mononitrate, marked ISMO 10, 20mg of isosorbide mononitrate (scored tablets), marked BM/B3 or 40mg of isosorbide mononitrate (scored tablets), marked ISMO 40.41s0, ISMO RETARD, sustained-release, sugar-coated, white tablets containing 40mg of isosorbide mononitrate. Usedfor: Ismo, additional treatment for congestive heart failure which has not responded to diuretics or cardiac glycosides, prevention of angina. Ismo Retard, prevention of angina.
Dosage
Adults, prevention of heart failure and angina, Ismo, 10mg each day for first 2 days then increasing to 10mg twice each day for 3 days; thereafter, a maintenance dose inthe order of 20mg, 2 to 3 times each day to a daily maximum of 120mg. Prevention of angina, Ismo Retard, 1 tablet taken every morning.
Special Care
Various heart disorders - stenosis (narrowing) of mitral and/or aortic valves, cardiac tamponade, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (enlarged and diseased heart), raised pressure within the skull, circulatory disorders connected with standing posture.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, heart attack with low filling pressure, very low blood pressure, heart shock, shock, collapse of circulation.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Sildenafil.
