Isopto Atropine

What is it?

Lubricant and anticholinergic eyedrops containing 1% atropine sulphate and 0.5% hypromellose.

Medical Uses

To produce long-lasting mydriasis (the drug is mydriatic)-fixed dilation of the pupil of the eye, and cycloplegia (cycloplegic)-paralysis of the ciliary muscles of the eye. This is in order to allow detailed examination of the eye to be carried out.

Dosage

Adults, for uveitis (inflammation of the uveal tract), 1 drop 3 times each day; for refraction, 1 to 2 drops, 1 hour before eye is examined. Children, uveitis, 1 drop 3 times each day; refraction, 1 drop twice each day for 1 to 2 days before eye is examined.

Special Care

Pressure should be applied over lachrymal (tear) sac for 1 minute.

Avoid Use

Patients with soft contact lenses, narrow angle glaucoma.

Known Side Effects

Dry mouth, sensitivity to light, stinging in eye, blurring of vision, headache, rapid heartbeat. Also, changes in behaviour and psychotic responses.
