Jectofer

What is it?

A haematinic compound available in ampoules for injection containing iron sorbitol (equivalent to 50mg of iron per ml). Used for. anaemia caused by iron deficiency.

Dosage

Adults and children over 3kg in weight, 1.5mg per kg of body weight, by intramuscular injection, as a single dose. The maximum dose for each injection is 100mg each day; elderly patients should be treated every second day. The number of doses needed depends upon the patient's level of haemoglobin. Also, consult manufacturer's instructions. Any iron tablets being taken should be stopped 24 hours before the injection is given.

Special Care

Elderly, debilitated or malnourished, low body weight patients, asthma, previous allergies, haemoglobinopathies, iron storage disorders.

Avoid Use

Children under 3 years, early pregnancy, patients with certain other types of anaemia (hypoplastic or aplastic), severe kidney or liver disorders, acute leukaemia, untreated infections of the urinary tract.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Chloramphenicol.

Known Side Effects

Heart arrhythmias, circulatory collapse, gastrointestinal upset, muscle pains, nettle rash, flushes, sweating, headache, loss of sense of taste or metallic taste in mouth, reactions at injection site.
