Kefadol

What is it?

A cephalosporin antibiotic preparation available as a powder in vials for reconstitution and injection containing 1g cefamandole (as nafate).

Medical Uses

Life-threatening, severe infections.

Dosage

Adults, 500mg-2g given by intramuscular or intravenous injection every 4 to 8 hours with a maximum dose of 12g every 24 hours. Children over 1 month, 50 to 100mg per kg of body weight each day in divided dose every 4 to 8 hours, with a maximum dose of 150mg per kg of body weight daily.

Special Care

Patients with kidney disease or sensitivity to penicillin.

Avoid Use

Children under 1 month.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Aminoglycosides, loop diuretics.

Known Side Effects

Gastro-intestinal upset, blood changes (reduction in levels of white blood cells), thrombocytopenia. Also, allergic reactions, rise in level of blood urea and liver enzymes, cholestatic jaundice, short-lived hepatitis, positive Coomb's test (a test for rhesus antibodies).
