Kemadrin
What is it?
An anticholinergic preparation available as scored white tablets containing 5mg of procyclidine hydrochloride marked WELLCOME S3A.
Medical Uses
Parkinsonism, drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms ( involuntary movements, abnormal posture, changes in muscle tone).
Dosage
Adults, Parkinson's disease, 2.5mg 3 times each day after meals, in first instance, then increasing every second or third day by 2.5 to 5mg. The maximum daily dose is 60mg with usual maintenance in the order of 15 to 30mg. Extrapyramidal symptoms, 2.5mg 3 times each day taken with meals at first, increasing by 2.5mg each day until symptoms improve. The usual maintenance dose is in the order of 10 to 30mg each day.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly patients, enlarged prostate gland, kidney or liver disease, tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder, often induced by prolonged treatment with phenothiazine drugs in the elderly). Drug should be gradually withdrawn.
Avoid Use
Children, retention of urine, obstruction of gastrointestinal tract, narrow angle glaucoma.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Antihistamines, phenothiazines, TCADs, levodopa, MAOIs, drugs with cholinergic effects, amantadine, quinidine, ketoconazole.
Known Side Effects
Anticholinergic side effects, confusion with higher doses.
